Startup uses behavioral sciences to fight student absenteeism

Chronic student absenteeism is one of the many problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. EveryDay Labs is a startup looking to increase attendance rates by 10-15% across the district. The company recently announced an $ 8 million Series A funding round led by women-only venture capital fund Rethink Impact.

“Even before the pandemic, 1 in 6 students missed 10% or more of school days,” Emily Bailard, CEO of EveryDay Labs, told Yahoo Finance. “Now since the pandemic it’s really on a spiral, and so we’ve seen these rates double, especially among the most vulnerable students and disadvantaged students and students,” she said.

“By forging a real relationship between school staff and families, we are truly uniting behavioral science and data science for effective family engagement,” says Bailard. The CEO of EveryDay Labs used her daughter Jane as an example of how the platform’s system works to help parents track their child’s attendance.

“Most parents lose track of absences. If Jane starts to miss too many schools and go off the rails, I’ll start getting nudges in the post and text messages that help me keep track of Jane’s absences and show me how it compares to her classmates. . And then also, very critically, helps me connect to resources to help me overcome any barriers to participation that we might be facing, ”Bailard said.

Bailard told Yahoo Finance that high school absenteeism is the highest among grade levels. However, the pandemic has made it a pervasive problem for young children, which can have serious consequences.

“This is really concerning because we know that when students miss even two days of school per month in Kindergarten and Grade 1, they are much less likely to be good readers until they reach grade. third year. Attendance in these early years is therefore just as critical as in the later, ”she said.
